05 Oct Saggas promotes a project to offset its 2021 carbon footprint
- Saggas is participating in a reforestation project in Ejulve, Teruel, aimed at offsetting 500 tCO2e.
- Saggas has increased its ambition in calculating its Carbon Footprint by including emissions associated with its value chain.
The company has presented its Environmental Declaration for the year 2022, a document that details the actions taken by Saggas during the year and fulfills its commitments under the EMAS system.
The 2022 Environmental Declaration from Saggas, which has been verified by accredited entities, confirms the progress made by the company in this area. Specifically, last year, Saggas began participating in a reforestation project covering 2.27 hectares of Public Utility Forest in Ejulve, Teruel, which was affected by a fire in 2009. This absorption project will last 45 years, during which Saggas is committed to periodic monitoring and includes the planting of 1,362 native trees.
With this project, Saggas aims to offset the carbon footprint generated in 2021, approximately 500 tCO2e. This amount includes the total carbon footprint of the plant in scope 1 and part of scope 3, which covers employee commutes from home to work and work-related travel. This project, registered with the Spanish Office for Climate Change, has allowed the company to obtain the Calculate, Reduce, and Offset seal.
In 2022, Saggas also enhanced its ambition in the calculation and verification of its Carbon Footprint by incorporating emissions associated with its value chain. This includes emissions related to purchased goods, maritime LNG transport, and LNG tanker truck transport. This measure is part of Saggas’ second Strategic Carbon Plan for the period 2021-2026, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Furthermore, the energy efficiency measures implemented by Saggas to prevent direct and indirect emissions from the plant have allowed it to remain excluded from the Emissions Trading System for another year. Notable among these measures are improvements in operational and maintenance processes.
Additionally, in 2022, Saggas’ methane emission reduction plan, presented under the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) program, received the “Gold Standard” distinction for the second consecutive year from the United Nations. This international recognition indicates that the actions outlined in the plan are robust and align with Saggas’ methane reduction targets: a 45% decrease by 2025 compared to 2015 levels. The quality of the data provided by Saggas has also improved, reporting emissions across all activity sources.
