Carbon footprint

Strategic carbon plan

Saggas carries out its activity in accordance with the principles established by European Climate and Energy Policies, with the aim of being carbon neutral by 2050 by reducing emissions, guaranteeing energy security and competitiveness.

These challenges have been addressed in the 2014-2020 Carbon Strategic Plan, the purpose of which was to integrate these principles into our business strategy and our operational and support processes included in our activity. This plan has incorporated some investments as well as some operational and technological improvements which have made possible to avoid the emission of around 280,000 tons of CO2e during this period.

“We have already avoided the emission of around 280,000 tons of CO2e into the atmosphere”

Our ambition related to the constant improvement has led us to approve a new Carbon Strategic Plan for the period 2021-2026, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The CSP II contemplates the following guidelines:

Integrate climate change into Saggas´ organization as a strategic factor in business decision-making and long-term risk management.

Contribute to the mitigation of climate change through the improvement of energy efficiency and the improvement of processes and activities.

– Adopt actions focused on promoting the use of low-carbon fuels in road and maritime transport.

Take part to the decarbonisation of the energy model through the use of renewable energy and the promotion of the circular economy.

Collaborate in research, innovation and development related to renewable gases.

Encourage low-carbon lifestyles and promote a fair energy transition.

“Reduction of methane emissions”

Saggas has raised its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint of direct emissions to the highest level through its voluntary adherence to Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), an initiative promoted by the The United Nations Environment Programme UNEP, which is part of the EU strategy to reduce methane emissions.

The voluntary adherence to Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) has the ultimate goal of reducing methane emissions as part of the natural gas value chain, through improved data accuracy, reduction plans and greater dissemination of this information.

Saggas was one of the first 62 companies around the world to have signed up to this project, which has set itself the goal of reducing methane emissions by 45% by 2025 and between 60 and 75% in 2030.

The plan presented by the plant to reduce its methane emissions has obtained, for the third year in a row, the “Gold Standard” distinction, a recognition granted by the United Nations that certifies the actions contemplated in the plan are solid and aligned with the aforementioned goal: to reduce methane emissions by 45% in 2025 compared to those of 2015.

Since 2013, at Saggas we annually verify our carbon footprint according to ISO 14064 and we have our annual carbon footprints registered in the Spanish Office for Climate Change, obtaining the “Calculo”, “Reduzco” and “Compenso” seals.
